A viewpoint located at the end of the hiking trail to Ponta de São Lourenço, which takes about 3 hours to reach (+ 3 hours return trip). It is the easternmost point of Madeira, surrounded on two sides by the ocean. The site is classified as a Partial Nature Reserve. Several rare plants and diverse fauna can be found here, including several protected seabirds (the behemoth or black soul). This peninsula of volcanic origin is about 9 km long, together with the two islets Ilhéu do Desembarcadouro and Ilhéu do Farol. The route is not too demanding, but there are steep climbs along the way, and strong winds to be reckoned with, but the views along the way will make up for any inconvenience on the trail. However, the best way to discover the natural and scenic wealth of this peninsula is the 6-kilometre Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço trail.
A lookout point 280 metres above sea level from where you can admire the Machico Valley and a panoramic view of Madeira's east coast. Stretching from the mountain peaks of the central part of the island to Ponta de São Lourenço at the eastern end of Madeira, catching a glimpse of the Desert Islands to the south-east and admiring these places at the same time. This point is located on the path that leads to the summit of Pico do Facho before reaching the Caniçal Tunnel. This is a space of great historical symbolism, as it used to be a hill on which large bonfires were lit when there was a need to alert the population to impending danger from the ocean. Today, this vantage point offers a fireplace, access to benches and tables where you can relax, eat and enjoy the magnificent views of the Machico Valley, the mountain massif, the airport and Caniçal and Porto Santo.
Located on the São Lourenço peninsula in Caniçal on the eastern end of the island. It deserves special attention due to its semi-desert climate, northerly winds, low vegetation and lack of trees, creating a landscape in stark contrast to the green forests of Madeira. This point offers a unique perspective of the Atlantic's boundlessness, the possibility of spotting the island of Porto Santo and observing the shape of the island's shield volcano.
This magnificent vantage point is a combination of an incredible view, wind in your hair, height and a glass platform that gives you that adrenaline rush feeling when you set foot on this platform, from which you can admire the boundlessness of the ocean, the southern coast of Madeira and the cliff beneath our feet. Cabo Girão is the second largest cliff in Europe, jutting out of the ocean at 580m above sea level and by far the highest on the island. It is located in the southern part of the island, at the foot of the town of Câmara de Lobos, an urban district surrounded by a natural amphitheatre facing south, where small areas of fajãs Rancho farmland stand out at the foot of the cliff. Cabo Girão is considered one of the island's most beautiful and frequently visited tourist attractions due to its picturesque location.
It is one of the most popular viewpoints on the island. The platform is visited by 1,800 people every day. It is located at an altitude of 1,095 metres above sea level in the mountainous interior of the municipality of Câmara de Lobos. Access to the site is via a path starting next to the Estalagem da Eira do Serrando. Once the climb is complete, the visitor's eyes will be treated to a magnificent panoramic view of the parish of Curral das Freiras and the surrounding magnificent mountains of the central massif. The Eira do Serrado viewpoint is the perfect place to appreciate the erosive influence of the natural elements that, over the centuries, have shaped the island. On the flat terrain of this valley, lies the village of Curral das Freiras, or Valley of the Nuns, whose picturesque profile gives a special charm to the whole landscape.
If you are planning to visit Madeira or are curious about the spectacular views this volcanic island has to offer, you are in the right place. In this article, we will introduce you to what we think are the most attractive viewpoints on Madeira, for those who like nature, the city, aeroplanes, but also for those who love a bit of adrenaline too. Miradouro means nothing more than a viewpoint in Portuguese. When travelling around Madeira, whether by car, public transport or on foot, you will come across brown signs with this very word Miradouro and the symbol of binoculars. When seeing this sign, it is worth stopping and taking many beautiful shots. Madeira's viewpoints can be found inland as well as on the coast and, most importantly, many of them have been developed to be comfortable and safe for visitors. The order of the viewpoints is random and each of you can, after discovering these places, create your own subjective ranking of where the view was good and where it felt like you were on top of the world.
