Visiting the island on your own, in a group or with a guide, you can fully experience with all your senses what Madeira has to offer, often taking the breath away of many a traveller.

This blog about Madeira will point you to a short description of the places that will stay in your memory for a long time. According to many tourists, as well as ours, the most interesting attractions to visit first on the island and which should be included in your itinerary. In further articles, we will give you some of the lesser known, but equally stunning places that Madeira hides, which are worth paying a little attention to.

MADEIRA - A GLIMPSE OF NATURE'S WONDERS

Madeira's stunning scenery is its biggest attraction. The island is famous for its dramatic cliffs, green forests and pristine beaches. One of the most distinctive natural features is the Laurisilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This ancient laurel forest is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers, offering a network of trails that wind through the lush greenery and offer breathtaking views at every turn. For those who love the ocean, Madeira's coastline does not disappoint. From the black sandy beaches of Seixal to the natural pools of Porto Moniz, the island's coastline is a playground for water enthusiasts. The crystal clear waters are perfect for snorkelling, diving and even whale watching, providing a glimpse of the rich marine life surrounding the island.

CULTURAL RICHNESS AND FESTIVITIES

Madeira's culture is as vibrant as its landscapes. The island's capital, Funchal, is a vibrant city where modernity blends with tradition. Strolling through the narrow streets of the old town, you will find charming architecture, colourful murals and lively markets. The Mercado dos Lavradores (farmers' market) is a delight for the senses, full of exotic fruits, fresh flowers and local crafts. One of the best times to visit Madeira are the famous festivals. Carnival in February is a feast of colour and music, while the Madeira Flower Festival in spring celebrates the island's blossoming beauty with elaborate flower displays and parades. In addition, the Madeira Wine Festival in September showcases the island's rich wine heritage, offering visitors the chance to sample some of the world's best wines.

CULINARY DELIGHTS

No visit to Madeira would be complete without taking advantage of its culinary offerings. The island's cuisine is a delightful blend of Portuguese and local flavours. Fresh seafood is a staple, and dishes such as espada com banana (black fish with banana) and lapas (limpets) are local favourites. Meat lovers will be delighted with espetada, a traditional dish of marinated beef skewers cooked over an open fire. Madeira is also famous for its namesake, fortified wine, which comes in a variety of styles, from dry to sweet. A visit to one of the island's many wineries gives you the opportunity to learn about the wine-making process and, of course, taste the different varieties.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

For adventurers, Madeira offers plenty of outdoor activities. The island's rugged terrain is ideal for hiking, with trails such as Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo offering challenging hikes with rewarding panoramic views. Canyoning, paragliding and mountain biking are also popular activities, catering for thrill seekers of all levels. For a more leisurely experience, levada walks are a unique way to explore the island. Originally built to carry water from the mountains to the agricultural regions, these irrigation canals now serve as scenic footpaths that wind through the countryside, offering stunning views and a peaceful connection with nature.
