Saint Lawrence Peninsula in Madeira

ANY QUESTIONS?

The Saint Lawrence Peninsula (Ponta de São Lourenço) is the easternmost part of Madeira, famous for its rugged volcanic landscape, spectacular cliffs, and extraordinary views of the Atlantic Ocean. Unlike the rest of the island, which delights with lush greenery, this area resembles an almost desert-like, rocky terrain. It is one of the most interesting places for trekking and admiring nature in Madeira, offering unforgettable experiences.

What are the characteristics and location of the Saint Lawrence Peninsula?

Ponta de São Lourenço is a rocky promontory about 9 km long, geologically contrasting with the rest of Madeira. While most of the island is covered with dense laurel forests and lush vegetation, here, raw cliffs, sharp rocky ridges, and formations sculpted by wind and ocean dominate. This area is a protected nature reserve, allowing for the preservation of its unique character.

The trekking trail on the Saint Lawrence Peninsula (Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço)

The main attraction of the peninsula is the trekking trail Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço. The route is about 8 km round trip and usually takes 3–4 hours to complete. The trail is linear, meaning you return the same way. Although the path is well-maintained, one should be aware of the moderate difficulty level, and in some places, exposure to wind and sun.

Along the trail, there are numerous viewpoints from which you can admire the panoramas of the ocean, rocky coasts, and nearby islets such as Ilhéu do Farol and Ilhéu da Cevada. At the end of the trail, there is the Casa do Sardinha shelter, perfect for a short rest. From there, you can climb a small hill for a fantastic view of the lighthouse.

Flora and fauna of the peninsula

The harsh conditions of the Saint Lawrence Peninsula have forced the local flora and fauna to adapt to the challenging environment. You will encounter endemic plant species that can survive in a dry climate and rocky substrate. The peninsula is also an important site for observing seabirds, including the rare Madeiran storm-petrel. Among the rocks and bushes, you can also spot unique species of lizards and insects.

Practical tips for visitors

Preparation for the trip is key to fully enjoy the trail:

  • Water and sun protection: There is no shade or water sources along the route. You should bring a large supply of water, a hat, and sunscreen.

  • Best time to visit: Spring is the ideal time for a trip when the vegetation is in bloom, and autumn offers pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds.

  • Trail conditions: The route is not recommended for those with a fear of heights due to significant exposure in places. Nevertheless, the views reward all the difficulties. At the end of the trail, near Casa do Sardinha, there is a small beach perfect for a refreshing swim.

How to get to the Saint Lawrence Peninsula (Ponta de São Lourenço) in Madeira?

Getting to the starting point of the famous trail to Ponta de São Lourenço is relatively straightforward but requires some planning. Here are the main options:

1. By car (the most convenient option)

  • Navigation destination: Enter in the navigation system "Ponta do São Lourenço", "Casa do Sardinha" or "Parking Baía d'Abra". This will take you directly to the main paid parking lot at the trailhead.

  • Route: The route from Funchal follows a well-maintained but winding mountain road ER-101 (eastern coast) or Via Rápida (through tunnels). The last section is a narrow winding road descending to the ocean. Exercise caution.

  • Parking: There is a large, guarded parking lot on site (about 3-4 EUR for the whole day). During peak season (summer, holidays), it can fill up very quickly, so it's worth arriving in the morning.

2. By hired car with a driver or taxi

This is a good option if you do not want to drive yourself. You can hire a taxi by the hour or order a transfer. Agree on the price with the driver in advance and the time for them to pick you up (the walk takes about 2.5-3 hours round trip).

3. By bus (the cheapest option)

Line: 113 (Funchal - Caniçal - Machico).

Stop: Get off at the stop "Baía d'Abra" (sometimes written as "B. d'Abra"), which is located right by the entrance to the parking lot and trail.

Frequency: Buses run regularly, but the schedule may be limited, especially off-season. Be sure to check the current timetable for the day of your trip on the carrier's website SIGA.

Pros: Low cost.

Cons: Less flexibility, possible long travel time with transfers.

From my own experience: Once, we had to improvise when the last bus of line 113 did not show up at the stop. Necessarily, we started walking towards Caniçal, hoping for any transport. Upon reaching there, lacking other options, we took a taxi that drove us to Funchal. This unplanned nighttime adventure was costly but also an unforgettable lesson to always have a backup plan in case the last bus disappears from the schedule.

4.Organized tour

Our travel agency in Funchal offers tours to the peninsula, often combined with other attractionsof eastern Madeira (e.g., with the São Jorge Canyons or a visit to Machico). This option is completely stress-free – transport anda guide are included in the price.

Summary and practical advice:

The best and most flexible way is to travel by your own or rented car. This gives you the freedom to arrive at any time and allows you to avoid the stress of the last return bus. Remember to arrive as early as possible in the morning – you will avoid crowds on the trail and have a guaranteed parking spot. Parking can be crowded, so it's worth arriving early in the morning.

Where does the name of São Lourenço Peninsula in Madeira come from?

The name of the Saint Lawrence Peninsula (Ponta de São Lourenço) comes from one of the discoverers of Madeira, the Portuguese sailor João Gonçalves Zarco.

Legend has it that when Zarco and his crew approached the eastern tip of the island, seeing the harsh and rocky land, he shouted to the crew "São Lourenço, basta!", which means "Saint Lawrence, enough!" or "Saint Lawrence, that's enough!" These words were meant to express relief after a long and uncertain sea voyage. Thus, the caravel that Zarco sailed on named this place.

Other sources suggest that the name comes from the name of the caravel on which Zarco sailed – "São Lourenço". Regardless of the exact etymology, the name is closely related to the moment of Madeira's discovery and sailing, and Saint Lawrence, as the patron of sailors, perfectly fits the symbolism of this place.
