CORAL BEER

Coral beer is the most popular local beer on Madeira, having been brewed by the Empresa de Cervejas de Madeira since 1872. Today, its producer is Heineken, but the island brewery itself was founded in the late 19th century and its traditional brewing methods are still used today. It is produced from the finest malts of Czech origin, fermented and matured at low temperatures. It has a pale golden colour, a clean, aromatic taste, a light texture and a pleasant aroma. The classic that Coral offers is lager, but there is also stout, hard, seltzer and non-alcoholic lagers. It is a great local beer highly appreciated by locals and visitors alike.

Madeira is not only a beautiful place, known for its stunning views, but when it comes to food and drink, it is also very recognisable. Whether you have just one day in Madeira or you are here for a week or even longer, it is worth following the trail of tasting Madeira's beverages or buying a few types so that you can, in the peace and quiet of your four corners, reminisce with a glass of good drink in hand and reminisce about the days spent on this charming island of Madeira.

PONCHA

Poncha, when you are in Madeira, it is inevitable not to try it. Created in Câmara de Lobos by fishermen who wanted to guard against scurvy. They were supposed to eat lemons, and to prevent the lemons from spoiling too soon, they were transported in a mixture of rum and sugar cane molasses. Poncha today is made with Madeira rum or brandy or aguardente de cana rum, lemon juice, cane sugar and honey. It is equally tasty when combined with other fresh tropical fruits such as passion fruit or orange. Poncha is served in small glasses, with or without ice. In most establishments, it is served with a bowl of peanuts or a portion of tremoço, or yellow lupine. Tremoço should be eaten like sunflower seeds, that is, without the shells. To make a real poncha, you need such a mixing tool called a mexelote. It is carved from the wood of the laurel tree, a tree native to Madeira. Local tradition says that this real mexelote, influences the taste of the poncha, making it a truly Madeiran experience for the taste buds. There is another tradition in Madeira regarding the drinking of poncha. It is said to cure and people are encouraged to drink it when they catch a cold.... Judge for yourself.

RUM / AGUARDENTE

Madeira rum is made from fresh sugar cane from the island and is only made here, unlike mass-produced rums made from molasses. Madeira rum is distilled only once, preserving its aroma and freshness. It is classified as an agricultural rum, characterised by its exceptional quality and the experience of dedicated generations who have nurtured and perfected the production. Madeira rum has a minimum alcohol content of 37.55 vol. Mature Madeira rum can only be aged in oak barrels for a minimum of three years. It stands out for its structure, aromatic complexity, elegance of flavour and longevity. The natural Madeira rum is distinguished by its intensity and multifaceted aroma, freshness, minerality and longevity.
