is the third highest peak located at 1,818 metres above sea level in Madeira. From here, the views extend over a wide expanse of the unique majesty of the Madeira Mountain Massif combined with the Atlantic Ocean in the background. Existing cinematic mountain scenery, it will delight anyone who sets foot here. From Pico Areeiro, you can start walking the 10 km Vereda do Areeiro route (PR 1), which will take you through Pico das Torres and end at the highest peak of Pico Ruivo. The route takes about 3 hours one way and passes through several tunnels dug into the mountains. The summit of Pico do Areeiro is the most visited and photographed place on the island. Not only because of the direct access and on-site facilities, such as a car park, café and souvenir shop, but also for the spectacular sunrise view. Not far from the summit there is also the Portuguese Air Force Radar Station No. 4 and a lookout point. Pico do Areeiro has been included in the Natura 2000 network and is important for the protection of the local wildlife. For keen nature watchers, an encounter with one of the most endangered bird species in Europe, the Madeira monkshood (Madeira Freira), awaits. The mountain vegetation here is dominated by the centuries-old Urzes, ancient endemic trees that were established before Madeira was discovered. From Pico do Areeiro you can see places such as, Ponta de São Lorenço, Curral das Freiras and even, in good weather conditions, the island of Porto Santo. As you can see, hiking on the peaks of Madeira is a veritable paradise for hikers and climbers. The paths here are very well maintained and signposted, and the safety of the thousands of hikers who travel these trails every day is fundamental to the Government of Madeira. Therefore, there are routes for everyone depending on their tastes and fitness level. However, the most important thing in all of this is to have fun, recharge your batteries, have an unforgettable experience and beautiful photos at the end of the route. However, let's also not forget the more important issue of hiking the peaks of Madeira - good equipment and your own safety, which should never be neglected.
It is the second highest peak on Madeira and is 1,851 metres above sea level and lies between Pico Ruivo in the north and Pico do Areeiro in the south of the island. If you like more difficult climbs this is the ideal place. This peak can only be reached via a trail from Pico do Areeiro from the car park and air defence station to Pico Ruivo. The distance to cover is only about 6 km one way, which will take you halfway to this summit, but it is a difficult challenge due to the rock-cut approaches, tunnels and staircase surprises. Alternatively, this summit can be reached from the north by extending the walk on the side of Pico Ruivo from Achada to Teixeira. On this route and after a short climb, you can finally enjoy the view of Pico das Torres. Whichever route you take to this summit you need to be in good physical condition, have suitable trekking shoes, clothing and a water bottle and snacks before the expedition. Nevertheless, this trek has the advantage of combining the three most important peaks on Madeira and from each one you can enjoy unique panoramas of the island's mountainous, volcanic massifs and often over a sea of clouds, literally!
At just 1,862 metres above sea level, the peak is the third highest point in Portugal and is located in Madeira. It is a place you definitely need to visit and take your time. Nowadays, this vantage point can be reached on foot via specially designated trails starting from Vereda to Pico Ruivo (PR 1.2) is 2.8 km long one way, walking takes about 1.5 hours round trip or from Pico Areeiro (PR 1.1) or from Achada to Teixeira. From the summit of Pico Ruivo, located in the municipality of Santana, you can see many magnificent places because, as we mentioned in the introduction, it is the highest point of the Madeira archipelago. From its summit, we can see the picturesque parish of Curral das Freiras, surrounded by green mountains, the municipality of Câmara de Lobos, the various towns of Santana, the impressive depths of the Ribeira Grande and São Jorge valleys, and on clear days, we can see the island of Porto Santo and the Desertas group of islands. The vegetation we encounter along the way is mainly mountain heather, ferns, mosses and lichens, living in rocks or crevices. As for the fauna, there are birds such as the Bis-bis (Regulus ignicapus madeirensis), the common finch (Fringilla coelebs) and the common redshank (Linaria cannabina). The red partridge (Alectoris rufa) is also occasionally seen. Until a few years ago, it was possible to see goats, sheep or cows breeding on the slopes of the mountain. However, it is the monumental rock formations rising above the clouds that now dominate the trail and the entire landscape of Pico Ruivo.
If you're a hiking enthusiast looking for fabulous, unforgettable views or just a new challenge, climbing one of these peaks in Madeira will give you all that and more. Read this article and add one or all three of these peaks to your itinerary and get going, full of fantastic views on the trail.
