LESSER-KNOWN LEVADAS - HIKING IN SILENCE

Madeira's levadas aren't just walking trails - they're living monuments to the island's history, testifying to ancient engineering craftsmanship and the locals' deep bond with nature. Each of these levadas hides the story of how water, once a luxurious gift, was carefully diverted to farmland to sustain life on this rugged, mountainous island. As we walk along the levadas, we travel back in time - in the footsteps of the early settlers who, in the 15th century, subjugated nature with extraordinary determination and began building narrow irrigation canals, and today hundreds of kilometers of these water arteries not only supply water to farmlands and towns, but also provide some of the most beautiful hiking trails in the world, harmoniously integrated into the island's landscape.

Levada do Castelejo - a trail deep into the green heart of Madeira

Carved out in the Porto da Cruz valley on the northern coast of Madeira in the Santana area. This is one of the less traveled but extremely scenic routes. The trail follows a levada that winds through lush green valleys, surrounded by Madeira's characteristic laurel forests. The route is technically easy, but some sections can be narrow and slippery, especially after rain. At the beginning of the hike, views of the ocean and the steep slope, typical of the island's northern coast, open up. Further on, the trail dips into dense vegetation, passing small waterfalls, luscious green ferns and mossy rocks. In spring and summer, many of Madeira's native plants can be seen here, i.e.: orchids, yellow broom and white water lilies. This is an ideal route for those who appreciate peace and quiet and want to stop and listen to the natural sounds of the forest.

Levada dos Cedros - a mystical trail through an ancient forest

Levada dos Cedros is a unique hike through the heart of a UNESCO-listed laurel forest. This is one of the most magical trails in Madeira - thick fog often hovers over the ancient trees, giving the trail a mysterious, fairytale-like atmosphere. The trail begins near Fanal, a picturesque area covered with old laurel trees, whose twisted shape resembles a set from a fantasy film. This levada was established in the 17th century and still transports clean water from springs in the mountainous parts of the island. During the hike, the path leads along the levada, surrounded by lush vegetation, including ferns and mosses covering rocks and tree trunks. In places there are old wooden bridges and natural tunnels carved into the rock, with clear water passing through. Along the way you can hear birds chirping and the sound of water, making the route ideal for lovers of nature and silence. At the bottom of the trail are several small waterfalls and a viewpoint overlooking the Riberia da Janela valley. This is an ideal route for wildlife lovers and those who want to experience the magical atmosphere of the island's misty forests.

Levada do Moinho - waterway among green trees

This is one of the more scenic routes in the southwestern part of Madeira, in the Ponta do Sol area. Its name comes from the ancient water mills("moinho" means mill in Portuguese) that once operated along the levada. The trail offers sweeping mountain panoramas and spectacular views of valleys, terraced farmland, and is less crowded than popular routes in other parts of the island. The beginning of the route, at Lombada da Ponta do Sol, leads among the banana plantations and agricultural terraces typical of the region. Gradually, the levada leads into wilder landscapes, and dense vegetation wraps the path in shade, creating a pleasant microclimate. Along the way, one may encounter several waterfalls and numerous streams flowing down from the mountains.  This is an excellent option for those who want to combine a relaxing walk with beautiful views and traces of Madeira's past.

MADEIRA-PEACEFUL ISLAND FOR LOVERS OF NATURE AND SILENCE

29 March 2025

HIDDEN BEACHES AND COVES - RELAXING BY THE OCEAN

Madeira's coast, while not famous for its wide, sandy beaches, hides many little-known yet captivating corners - hidden beaches and coves that remain off the beaten tourist track. They offer tranquility, contact with wild nature and landscapes that will take your breath away. They can be reached on foot, by boat or by a challenging path, but each rewards visitors with an unforgettable view and a sense of discovering a place that still remains a mystery to most tourists.

Seixal Bay - a paradisiacal corner of northern Madeira

Located on the northern coast, Seixal Bay is one of the most picturesque places. Known for its beach of fine volcanic sand and spectacular views of the green cliffs and the Atlantic, it attracts both nature lovers and photographers looking for the perfect shot. Locals have long used the natural pools formed by eroding rocks - these places are not only beautiful, but also full of history. Walking along the shore, you can see traces of ancient settlements, and in the morning the bay becomes almost empty, offering ideal conditions for meditation and relaxation. The gentle waves and calmer waters of this part of the coast make it an ideal place for swimming, surfing and relaxing overlooking the majestic mountains. This is the perfect place to relax after exploring northern Madeira, where you can experience the wildness of nature and tranquility away from the crowds. Seixal Bay is a place where time slows down and nature shows its most spectacular face.

Prainha do Caniçal beach - a hidden oasis of golden sand

Located on the east coast of the island, it is distinguished by its natural golden sand - a rarity on a volcanic island where pebble or black sand beaches predominate. Hidden among steep and rugged cliffs, Prainha Beach is a little piece of heaven where fine sand, green vegetation and turquoise waters create an idyllic corner. Islanders value this place for its authenticity and tranquility - it's here, away from the massive tourist centers, that you can feel a true connection with nature. Getting to Prainha requires a short walk down a path, but the view you get once you get there makes up for every step. There is a small bar nearby where you can relax with a coffee or a local poncha. The beach, although small, impresses with its unique charm, which changes with the time of day - from the morning mist to picturesque sunsets. It's a real gem for those looking for a quiet place to relax surrounded by the wild Madeira nature.

Natural pools near Seixal - a wild harmony of volcanic formations and ocean

These are some of the most interesting rock formations in the north of Madeira. The natural pools, are a remarkable example of the interaction of natural forces - they were formed by solidified lava, which has been shaped over the centuries by the waves of the Atlantic. The result is a complex of natural basins filled with water of crystal clarity, offering not only spectacular views of the rocky cliffs, but also safe swimming areas - today they are not only a tourist attraction, but also a favorite destination for local residents. Unlike the more famous pools in Porto Moniz, those in Seixal are less commercial and retain a wild, natural character. This is one of those places for lovers of raw, unspoiled nature, where as you walk along the cliffs, you can admire how the blue of the ocean contrasts with the dark, rugged rock, creating a picture that will take your breath away.

FANAL FOREST - MAGICAL MORNINGS AMONG THE MISTS

The Fanal Forest, part of the ancient Laurissilva laurel forest, is where history meets nature. The centuries that have passed in the formation of these dense green spaces have left traces of the ancient world. At dawn, when a gentle mist hovers over the trees, the whole thing takes on an almost mystical dimension. Walking along the secluded paths, you can feel how every leaf and branch tell the story of the old days, when this land was almost a wild, untamed kingdom of nature. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers an unforgettable experience that allows you to deeply immerse yourself in authentic nature.  Walking in silence and tranquility, you can feel how each step becomes a meditation. The environment, which is dominated by natural sounds - the rustling of leaves, the gentle creaking of branches and the singing of birds - brings you into a state of deep contemplation. It is this pristine, almost mystical atmosphere that makes the Fanal forest worth visiting. This place allows you not only to get away from the daily hustle and bustle, but also to experience contact with nature in its purest form. Fanal is not just a forest - it is a living monument to history that has resisted the passage of time for centuries. Its unique character, shaped by millions of years, reminds us of the primordial force of nature, witnessed by ancient trees, often dating back hundreds of years.

A visit here becomes a journey through time, where each morning reveals new subtle details of the landscape. For those seeking an authentic experience and a moment of tranquility, mornings in the Fanal forest are a must. It's where you can rediscover how incredibly beautiful and full of life nature can be, while finding the tranquility that allows for reflection and regeneration.
