Sugar cane exhibition, Ponta do Sol
Sugar cane was first planted on Madeira around 1450, and in 1455, with the decline in wheat production, Madeira, with the help of Sicilian consultants and Genoese financiers, became a key player in sugar cane production. This and the island's location meant that both Genoese and Flemish merchants, who wanted to avoid the Venetian monopolies, had easy access to the new rare and favoured spice 'sweet salt' or sugar, as it is known today. So the Regional Sugar Cane Fair, held at the Canhas Farmers' Market in Ponta do Sol, pays homage to Madeira's 'sweet salt' by producing everything made from sugar cane, including cakes, drinks, as well as giving visitors the opportunity to cut sugar cane and enjoy the 'sweet' treats on offer.
