HISTORY OF THE CREATION OF THE MUSEUM

The initiative to establish the Banana Museum of Madeira, also known as BAM, was created by GESBA, a company dedicated to managing the island's banana sector, and out of a deep respect for the agricultural heritage of the Madeira region. The museum was established in Ponta do Sol, in the picturesque Lugar de Baixo area, to honor the importance of the banana in the island's history, culture and economy. Madeira, famous for growing succulent bananas, has for decades drawn strength from the traditions and passion of local farmers, both at home and abroad. A group of enthusiasts, wanting to celebrate both the historic cultivation methods and the artistic interpretation of the banana motif, decided to create a space where each exhibit would tell a story about this remarkable fruit. The creation of the museum is the result of a combination of knowledge, love of local tradition and a desire to share this heritage with visitors from around the world.

The place delights every visitor, offering both an educational experience and a delicious culinary experience. The museum is housed in a restored historic villa that blends into the historic landscape of Ponta do Sol. The museum grounds offer a picturesque view of the blue Atlantic, and the surrounding greenery makes every step within the museum seem to transport you to a world of peace and harmony with nature. The location, full of warmth and authenticity, provides the perfect backdrop for the story of the banana, a fruit that has become a symbol of the island.
