Ponta de São Lourenço
A viewpoint located at the end of the hiking trail to Ponta de São Lourenço, which takes about 3 hours to reach (+ 3 hours on the way back).
It is the easternmost point of Madeira, surrounded on two sides by the ocean. The site is classified as a Partial Nature Reserve.
Several rare plants and diverse fauna can be found here, including several protected seabirds (behemoth or black soul).
This peninsula of volcanic origin is about 9 km long, along with the two islets of Ilhéu do Desembarcadouro and Ilhéu do Farol.
The route is not too demanding, but there are steep climbs along the way, and strong winds must be expected, but the views along the way will make up for any kind of inconvenience on the trail. However, the best way to discover the natural and scenic richness of this peninsula is the 6-kilometer Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço trail.
Pico do Facho
A lookout point located 280 meters above sea level from where you can enjoy the Machico Valley and a panoramic view of Madeira's east coast. Stretching from the mountain peaks of the central part of the island to Ponta de São Lourenço at the eastern end of Madeira, catching a glimpse of the Desert Islands to the southeast and admiring these places at the same time. This point is located on the path that leads to the summit of Pico do Facho before reaching the Caniçal Tunnel. This is a space of great historical symbolism , for it used to be a hill on which large bonfires were lit when there was a need to alert the population of impending danger from the ocean. Today this vantage point offers a fireplace, access to benches and tables where you can relax, eat and enjoy the magnificent views of the Machico Valley, the mountain range, the airport and Caniçal and Porto Santo.
Pico do Rosto
Located on the São Lourenço peninsula in Caniçal on the eastern end of the island. It deserves special attention because of its semi-desert climate, northerly winds, low vegetation and lack of trees, which creates a landscape in stark contrast to the green forests of Madeira. The point offers a unique perspective of viewing the endlessness of the Atlantic, the opportunity to look out over the island of Porto Santo and observe the shape of the island's shield volcano.
Miradouro Cabo Girão
This magnificent vantage point is a combination of an amazing view, wind in your hair, height and a glass platform that gives you that adrenaline rush feeling when you set foot on this platform from which you can admire the boundlessness of the ocean, the southern coast of Madeira and the cliff beneath our feet. Cabo Girão is the second largest cliff in Europe, jutting out of the ocean at 580 meters above sea level and by far the highest on the island. It is located in the southern part of the island, at the foot of the town of Câmara de Lobos, an urban district surrounded by a natural amphitheater facing south, where small areas of fajãs Rancho farmland stand out at the foot of the cliff. Cabo Girão is considered one of the island's most beautiful and most visited tourist attractions due to its picturesque location. The platform is visited by 1,800 people daily.
Miradouro Eira do Serrado
This is one of the most popular viewpoints on the island. It is located at 1,095 meters above sea level in the mountainous interior of the municipality of Câmara de Lobos. Access to the site is via a path starting next to Estalagem da Eira do Serrando. Once the climb is complete, the visitor's eyes will be treated to a magnificent view of the skyline of the parish of Curral das Freiras and the surrounding magnificent mountains of the central massif. The Eira do Serrado viewpoint is the perfect place to appreciate the erosive influence of the natural elements that, over the centuries, have shaped the island. On the flat terrain of this valley, lies the village of Curral das Freiras, or Valley of the Nuns, whose picturesque profile gives a special charm to the entire landscape.
