(Tour of the Centre of Madeira)
However, the best of the ways to experience the city's layouts is undoubtedly a ride on the Funchal - Monte funicular railway. The tour starts from the old part in Funchal at Campo Almirante Reis and arrives in less than 15 minutes at Monte station in Largodas Babosas. Thanks to this train, you can get to Monte in a fast way, while admiring the surroundings, which resemble an amphitheatre, a magnificent bird's eye view of the bay of Funchal and the valley giving you an unforgettable experience. While at the top of the town - Monte - it is worth taking a walk through the Monte Palace Tropical Garden. A 70,000m2 garden where its lush vegetation from all over the world allows us to enjoy the tranquillity in the shade of the garden, taste Madeira coffee and learn about the unique plants found there, including an area dedicated to the Laurissilva forest. Another place in this extraordinary garden is the Mystical Gardens of the Orient, where we can find various pagodas, Buddhist sculptures, red bridges and ponds where Koi fish and swans swim and encounter flamingos that strut beautifully for the tourists' lenses. Walking along a designated path through the garden, you can also visit the African Sculpture Museum and experience an encounter with hundreds of fascinating minerals in an area called 'Secrets of Mother Nature'.
Monte is still known for several attractions, but the 'sledge ride' from Monte down the steps leading to the church of Nossa Senhora do Monte do Funchal, where the end of the route is in Livramento, Caminho do Monte 82/84, from where you have to take bus number 19 to the city centre, is certainly the most crazy and original ride, through the narrow and winding streets to Funchal. Despite the passage of years and the development of urban transport on the island, these sledges are still used today. Which attracts hundreds of tourists, every day, eager to take part in this 10-minute exciting descent through the approximate 2 km length, at sometimes high speeds of around 50 km/h. The sledge is made of wood and wicker, has two seats, and glides on wooden skids. They are pushed, and at the same time steered by ropes, by two Carreiros, men dressed in the traditional white cotton outfit, straw hat and rubber sole shoes that serve as brakes. The downhill route through the picturesque streets of Funchal is a great alternative and fun for everyone. After such an exhilarating descent, it's time to even out the breath, enjoy the local ice cream and head down the city's main street along the waterfront to Funchal's most visited site to the CR7 Museum, or Cristiano Ronaldo Museum, located on Avenida Sá Carneiro - Praça do Mar No27. Where you can see all the trophies won by the best Portuguese player at the clubs he played for.
Read the correspondence of fans from all over the world, who not only write, but also draw and paint and send tributes to the five-time World's Best Football Player. At the museum, you can also interact with Ronaldo and have your photo taken as if you were by his side. Next to the museum, there is also the famous statue of the footballer adored by tourists and the Pestana CR7 hotel.
The next step from the local market is to head to a nearby street - Rua de Santa Maria - where you can experience the Art of Painted Doors by local and foreign artists. The 'Arte de portas abertas' project began in 2011, continues to this day and has given the old town area a new rebirth. The picturesque streets, attract thousands of tourists every year, as well as locals, to take in the art and experience its gastronomic sensations and charming nightlife with a glass of wine.
Start your tour of Madeira from the centre of the island - the heart of the island - the capital Funchal, where a walk through the charming streets of the city will allow you to feel the atmosphere of this magical island. Start your walk at the Mercado dos Lavradores (Local Farmers' Market), where the atmosphere of the local market and the meetings between locals and tourists are so close. Regional products are sold here every day, i.e.: fresh fish, exotic fruit, vegetables, herbs and all Madeira's flowers, wines, dried fruit as well as handicrafts. This market will provide you with many visual and taste experiences.
